Why?
During Homeless Awareness Week 2009, communities held over 70 events all across the state to raise awareness about this important issue. These events ranged from meetings with elected officials, to Project Homeless Connect events, to Shelter tours and soup kitchen lunches, and needs drives. It’s about more than devoting a week’s time to the fight, because the Campaign to End Homelessness will involve a strong commitment for years to come, but the concentrated effort on this week was strong, and says a lot about Michigan’s Commitment to ending homelessness.
Homeless Awareness Week 2010 will be November 14-20 — but don’t let that stop you from raising awareness all year long!

- There are 86,189 homeless people living in Michigan.
- More than half of Michigan’s homeless population is comprised of families.
- One in three homeless persons in Michigan is a child.
- Thirty-seven percent of single persons homeless in 2008 were homeless for the first time.
These numbers are real and the problem of homelessness in Michigan is grave. However, YOU can help! You can get involved in the fight to end homelessness in numerous ways throughout your community, and this website will assist you in finding the right volunteer or advocacy opportunity for you!
